CHEAP FOOD PREPS

www.providentliving.org

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has canneries throughout the country.

Some friends and I are going to one of the local ones in San Antonio to make a purchase.

The deals are great. AND...they do no10 cans and oxy sorbers...

time to get it done.:signs1:

It's too bad the closest one to me is about 6 hours away. I'd be on it like white on rice....

I don't know if anything's changed, but a few months ago they did. Trouble is, you have to make an appointment, and they're hard to get.

There's a "Canning Session" sticky on this forum that Tech Guy started. Had lots of good info on that. Lots of info - check it out....

The website will sell to anyone, it's already canned. The selection is much more limited than your canning options at a session.

To get a canning session you have to know the right people and the prices are slightly cheaper because you do the labor.

The problem with the canning session is that you will can yours and everyone elses in a 250 mile radius.

It's not too time consuming. I spent about 3 hours there. I left with 7 cases of #10 cans for next to nothing. I also learned a lot about canning. It's really easy. Anyone here could do it. The machine is about the size of a tabletop drill press.

Another sidenote:

The "storehouse", where the canning happens, was amazing. It was really clean and organized. There were enough preps in there to feed 50,000 people for a year I guesstimate. There was an entire section dedicated to generators of all different sizes. There were sections of diapers, radios, batteries and other stuff that I didn't expect to see in there.

I've never seen so many pallets of rice, beans, and wheat before. These people don't mess around.:coolbeer:

Yeah, the actual canning session is what I was referring to. The stuff they have on the website is a good deal - if you have mylar bags and 5 gal buckets, you may do just as well at the grocery store on rice and pinto beans. But like you said, the choices there are limited (no soft wheat, etc.)

I've ordered from the website before - it may be time to hit it again. And you can't beat their prices on oxygen absorbers....

Mick, To order on-line directly from a LDS center, you can get only a few items:

Item # Product
04008000 All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage. Free
06602000 Family Home Storage Pinto Beans $36.75 USD
06603000 Family Home Storage Quick Oats $23.25 USD
06604000 Family Home Storage Starter Kit $34.75 USD
06601000 Family Home Storage Wheat $30.50 USD
06605000 Family Home Storage White Rice $43.50 USD
81383000 110 Volt Automatic Impulse Pouch Sealer $350.00 USD
06600000 Family Home Storage Basic Recipes. Free
81381000 Dry-Pack Pouches. Foil pouches, case of 250 $94.00 USD
81382000 Oxygen Absorber Packets. Oxygen absorber, pkg. of 100 $12.00 USD

These are in #10 cans and have 20 to 30 year lives. Just be aware that the cases come with "FAMILY FOOD STORAGE" and the contents in BIG letters in 5 x 8 inch colored panels on each side of the box. Everyone will easily know what you are getting!

However, delivery is really fast and the prices are the best around. The drawback is that you place the order and they let you know later if the items are in stock or not. (As of yesterday, the oxy absorbers are on backorder).

This is a great place to use for the basic items.

The order page is at the LDS Catalog site: LINK
